Continuing a deaf or hard of hearing child’s music education, our next step in the Music to My Ears (MTME) program is instrument lessons for children ages four and above. From ukulele to piano and percussive instruments the Foundation’s goal is to deliver high quality music education programming. For every student that discovers an aptitude for music, scores of others develop habits of mind and behavior. Music classes facilitate self-discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and empathy that enhance our students’ social-emotional learning and serve them throughout their lives.Â
For children who are interested in continuing their music journey, the MTME Instrument Program provides a year of tuition-free instruction. This program includes both small group lessons along with a weekly private lesson to ensure our children are getting the one on one attention they deserve to foster their success. Whether the deaf or hard of hearing child would like to take piano, guitar or drums lessons, be a part of a rock band, or do musical theatre, our partner schools Merit, Old Town, Music Makers of Western Springs, Community School of the Arts, Encore Music Academy or School of Rock have classes at the entry level up to expert (and Conservatory at Merit). The MTME students will be placed in the age and level appropriate group with key supports along the way to give them every opportunity to be successful in their musical journey.
Started in 2019, we continue to expand our early childhood music school partners. This allows us to reduce barriers to attend a class by strategically selecting schools close to our families. Please have all the schools listed that provide early childhood classes;
The MTME Individual & Group Instrument Class Scholarship allows all deaf or hard of hearing children (up to 13 years of age), regardless of financial need, to attend a weekly private lesson on the instrument of their choice. The scholarship will provide one year of tuition-free instrument classes through FHSR’s partnerships with leading music schools throughout the Chicagoland area.
