Summer is quickly approaching and we are all eager for the long summer days and warm nights. Before the school year ends, take a moment to review your child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan, and all necessary accommodations and modifications are in place for their new classroom environment.
To assist you in navigating this process, we’re excited to introduce our new parent resource. This comprehensive guide covers everything from understanding your parental rights to valuable insights on IEPs, 504 plans, and tailored support for children with hearing loss.

Here are some summer tips to ensure your child is ready for the fall:
- Language Immersion: Keep your child engaged in language learning through various summer activities such as nature walks, cooking, park visits, and trips to the store. Expand on what you see and introduce new vocabulary words. Games like “I spy with my little eye” can make learning fun and interactive.
- Reading Time: Continue to read with your child or encourage independent reading. Set aside dedicated time for reading to foster a love for books and improve literacy skills. Â
- Math Skills: Practice math skills in everyday situations. Count objects during walks, practice adding and subtracting at the grocery store, and play math games like adding scores or guessing numbers at sporting events. Discuss numbers that are bigger and smaller to reinforce mathematical concepts.
- Car Games:Â Make car rides educational and entertaining by playing games like the ABC game. Look for words that start with each letter of the alphabet to enhance vocabulary and observation skills.
- Travel Preparedness: When traveling, ensure you have backup batteries and equipment in case of device malfunctions. Being prepared will help avoid disruptions during your travels.
- Camp Accommodations:Â If your child is attending a camp, make sure accommodations and modifications are in place to support their needs. Educate camp staff about your child’s hearing loss and provide guidance on how to effectively interact with them to ensure a successful and enjoyable summer experience.
